1. Mud Tubes on Walls or Foundations

Subterranean termites build pencil-sized mud tubes to travel from their underground colonies to their food source — your property's wooden structures. Check your foundation walls, floor joists, and crawl spaces for these brownish, dried-mud tunnels. If you break one open and find it active, you have an active termite infestation.

2. Hollow-Sounding Wood

When termites consume wood from the inside out, they leave a thin veneer of paint or wood surface intact. Tap on wooden beams, baseboards, and window frames with a screwdriver handle. If the wood sounds hollow or papery, termites may have been feeding on it from within.

3. Discarded Wings Near Windows and Doors

After swarming to mate and start new colonies, termites shed their wings. You may find small, translucent piles of wings near windowsills, doors, or light fixtures. This is a strong indication that a termite swarm has occurred nearby and a new colony may be establishing itself on your property.

4. Frass (Termite Droppings)

Drywood termites push their faecal pellets out of small holes in the wood they infest. These tiny, six-sided pellets resemble sawdust or sand and often accumulate in small piles beneath infested furniture, window sills, or wooden structures. If you spot frass, you likely have an active drywood termite colony.

5. Visible Wood Damage

If you can see the damage, the infestation is already advanced. Look for blistered or darkened areas on wooden surfaces, peeling paint that resembles water damage, or wood that crumbles easily when pressed. Termites eat wood along the grain, leaving a characteristic layered pattern.
